Each year, Calendar Day in Annapolis offers a critical opportunity to ensure that the voices of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are heard where policy decisions are made. This year, The Arc of Prince George’s County once again showed up—bringing self-advocates, families, and organizational leaders together to speak directly with Maryland legislators about the issues that matter most to our community.
Calendar Day is more than a visit to the State House. It is a day dedicated to advocacy, relationship-building, and sharing real stories that put a human face on public policy. During meetings with lawmakers, We highlighted the importance of sustained and increased funding for services that support people with IDD across their lifespans—including employment supports, residential services, and community-based programs that promote independence and dignity.
For families and caregivers, these conversations represent hope and accountability. For self-advocates, they affirm a fundamental truth: decisions about their lives should never be made without their direct involvement. And for policymakers, Calendar Day provides a firsthand look at the impact of legislative decisions on real people in their districts.
Advocacy is a core part of our mission. While our programs provide daily support, our work at the policy level helps shape systems that allow people with IDD to thrive not just today, but for generations to come. By showing up consistently and collaboratively, The Arc strengthens its role as a trusted partner to legislators, community stakeholders, and the families we serve.
Calendar Day reminds us that progress happens when voices are shared, stories are heard, and communities come together to advocate for inclusion, equity, and opportunity for all.
