What is respite care?
Respite care is a service in which temporary care is provided to children and adults with disabilities, or chronic or terminal illnesses. It enables caregivers and families to take much-needed breaks from direct care.
Does my family member have to be DDA approved to receive respite care?
No, but you must have an application on file with the Department of Social Services. In Prince George’s County the grant to provide Respite Care is currently managed by the Department of Social Services. For an application and service provider listings call (301) 909-2090.
Where is respite care provided?
Respite care can be provided in out-of-home and in-home settings, depending on the needs of the family and available resources. Contact the Department of Social Services for the names of providers that have openings in order to select a provider that meets your needs.
Can I choose my respite provider?
Yes, you can choose your provider. Depending on your respite-funding source, you may be able to choose a friend or family member as your provider.
Can I use respite for a few hours at a time or must my family member stay overnight?
Programs will vary on this requirement. Be sure to ask providers about this as you consider respite programs for your family according to your needs.
