Interns,
Interns, Everywhere!
Here at The Arc we are proud of our
mission of offering a lifetime of support, understanding,
and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities
and their families, and we hope to share our expertise
in the field with as many people as possible.
That is one reason why The Arc offers hands-on internships
for college students. This experience allows them to
gain the skills needed to shift from the classroom to
the workplace, whether they are studying nursing, social
work, marketing, public relations, finance, human resources,
or business administration.
Two of The Arc’s summer interns,
Millie Clarkson and Becky Deright of The University
of Maryland’s Family Science Department, have
gained an understanding of what it takes to help students
with developmental disabilities successfully transition
from high school to the professional arena. They are
learning about best practices within the disability
field, the importance of interagency collaboration,
and how to work alongside individuals with developmental
disabilities.
“We
are learning a lot about the different issues families
in the disability community face that we couldn't learn
about in a textbook,” Millie Clarkson, University
of Maryland student, said. “I think this internship
has shown me a lot about working with a nonprofit.”
And internships are not just beneficial
to the students. Melonee Clark, Family Specialist for
The Arc says, “Interns are valuable because they
bring in a network of community resources that may otherwise
go untapped.”
The
Arc offers an array of internships in many fields of
study. If you are interested in pursuing an internship
